The Holland Fire Department originated from the efforts of the holland home mutual insurance company in June of 1891. The public of holland demanded something be done in order to protect their property in case of a fire. Meetings were held and it was decided that a company be organized and called the Holland fire engine company. The HFEC would provide protection to those members of the fire insurance company. .H.J.Meyer, C.H.Rottger and William Heilman were appointed to that committee to investigate the cost of a hand operated fire engine. Few community members were appointed to start a picnic to raise the funds. It was decided in 1891 that a hand engine would be purchased for the sum of $245.00 from the L.M Rumsey manufacturing company of St. louis MO. The 1891 L.M Rumsey Hand pumper still exist today and belongs to the present-day Holland Volunteer Fire Department.
